DVD Cover Analysis of Disturbia

Disturbia (2007) directed by D.J. Caruso is a thriller hybrid consisting of elements of crime, horror and mystery with some elements of romance.
The character on this cover is assumed to be one of the main characters, where the other major characters can be seen through the binoculars although, the silhouette of the man is given an anonymous nature which creates an enigma code which we question the identity of that character. The title itself can give insight on what this character is feeling, assuming he is 'disturbed' by the fact he is living next door to suspected killer, where he investigates this by looking through the binoculars. Although the word 'disturbia' is not a real word, it can exaggerate on the emotion to make it seem like a psychological disorder of one being disturbed, in this case it is Kale.

Mise-en-scene
In this movie, this character (Kale) is often looking through binoculars where in this cover, that element is highlighted in colour as the character himself is in black and white. The orange and red colour theme creates an ambiance which suggests that the situation will become heated or possibly endanger the antagonists of the movie. This is an immediate attraction as we can identify key characters.
His eyes show seriousness as he is alerted by the fact that he may be living next door to a killer and this can be shown on this cover on the left in yellow.

Font and Text
The font used for all text on the cover is the same as the font used for the title, which can tell us more about the genre. This particular font can give a reaction of the film being possibly eerie, strange and uneasy as it is similar of that of a typewriter text. The white text also stands out quite intensely in front of the solid black background of the cover.

Questions raised from the cover
Question raised from looking at the film cover can include:

  • What makes the boy feel he is living next to a killer?
  • What has this 'killer' done?
  • Who is the female seen in the binoculars?
